About Bruce Copeland
My interest in photography started while working on an American Civil War research project while an undergrad at Virginia Tech. As I examined a special collection of archived materials, I became fascinated with how pioneer Civil War photojournalists Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner used the then-new technology of photography to capture and publish stunning, and sometimes haunting, photographs that told compelling stories about some of the people and events associated with that horrific period in our nation's history.
I purchased my first DSLR camera some 20 years ago and became a nature and wildlife photography enthusiast. Being a North Carolina Outer Banks resident, I am fortunate to have a treasure trove of venues and subjects to photograph, among them being 75+ miles of undeveloped ocean beaches and sand dunes in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, sound-side wetlands, iconic lighthouses, and numerous species of wildlife found in refuges on, or in close proximity to, the Outer Banks. There are also several locations on the Outer Banks with low levels of nighttime light pollution that are well suited for astrophotography.
In addition, driving 7 or so hours west of the Outer Banks takes me to two other places that I also love: the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia, and the Great Smoky Mountains that straddle the North Carolina and Tennessee border. These areas also offer incredible nature photography opportunities with their breath-taking mountain vistas, rushing streams and waterfalls, unique wildlife, beautiful spring flowers and brilliantly colored autumn foliage.
Thanks so much for visiting my website. I hope my photographs tell pleasant stories about a part of the world where I'm blessed to live, and I appreciate this opportunity to share some of my images with you. It's rewarding when a person tells me they are reminded of a fond memory or special moment in their life when looking at one of my photographs, and I'm flattered when someone chooses one of my prints for their home, workplace or as a gift for someone.
